I took my wife and two kids. Ages 2 and 6. They both loved it and the 2 hr block was plenty of time for us to find plenty of beautiful fossils. We ended up putting about 1/2 of the ones we found back because we didn't want to have that many at the house. It was hot but the section we were in had a little shade for the kids while I went out and opened up some larger rocks farther away.
I read about this place a long time ago and finally got to visit in May of 2017. We drove from Texas and we absolutely had a great time. If you're planning to visit, go on Saturday. Bevin is in charge on Saturdays and was a blast to dig along side of him. Besides being a pleasant individuals, he is very knowledgeable of all fossils. We are already planning another trip before the summer. You will not be disappointed. It was a lot of fun.
This place is incredible if you love fossil hunting. There were 8 people in our group and we did the half-day fossil hunt. Each one of us came out with a bucket full of fossils. U-Dig is in the middle of nowhere and can only be reached by going on a well-maintained 20+ mile of dirt road. There were only a couple of port-o-potties for restroom facilities but they were the cleanest port-o-potties I've ever seen.
Absolutely Amazing. Beautiful views, great fossils and great people. It was an incredible time. To those going for the first time I would recommend a couple bottles of water and gloves. Some good sunglasses and make sure to wear sunscreen. It was well worth the drive. I hope I can convince my wife to come back again. :)
The guy that was there helping us was awesome. We don't have enough good things to say about him. I think his name was Rodney? (sorry). He was very helpful and showed us the different types to look for and how to best find everything we wanted. He didn't act like we should already know anything and was very good with the kids.
Overall was a great experience. It took us about 3 hours to get there from Utah County, including the gravel road. It wasn't too rough of a road but I'm glad we took the CRV instead of the sedan.
This was our first trip to U-DIG and it was AWESOME! Our kids three little kids loved getting to find their own fossils. Robin was the best host. He took time to explain and show us how to find the trilobites. Robin keep up the great work! Were definitely going back again.
