The displays are very thorough, informative and thought provoking. The museum both educates about the past and challenges its visitors to fight against current injustice.
A lot of the stuff is still very well preserved. But don't take me wrong, these are lands of pain and betrayal
This is the second year I have taken my students to this museum, as we study WWII in my class. I highly recommend this museum. The curators, other employees and volunteers are very helpful, knowledgeable and easy to work with.
They recently moved the museum to Main Street. As of May 2017 the displays are complete.
Note: this is the actual internment camp site, NOT the museum - you should definitely go to the museum first in order to appreciate this site more. They provided me a map of the site, which helped me understand what I was seeing more.
You can also visit the actual location of Topaz, about 20 minutes outside of town. The buildings have all been removed. However many of the original foundations and other physical signs can be seen.
The camp site has basic signage that help to orient oneself as one walks about the grounds, provided one has a map detailing the block numbering. Maps of the site can be obtained at the Topaz Museum in Delta, so I highly recommend visiting the museum prior to making the trek out the Topaz site. The cracked concrete foundations of the housing, schools, and other structures are mostly what remains, along with some elements of the sewer systems.
An important place like this should have been preserved. Sadly, there is virtually nothing left to indicate the scope of this terrible place. There is a very good PBS special on the Japanese/American internment camps. It should be viewed BEFORE visiting Topaz.
Weather you are in a group or not, this is a fantastic museum.
I thought this was a very interesting place to go. You can just drive around and look at what's left of the internment camp. There's just foundations, nails, and some markers of where buildings would have been, but it has an eerie/sacred feel about it. I thought it was worth the drive out, just to see the actual place where these things happened, rather than just reading about what happened.
